The Hornets have work to do if they want to make it to the playoffs this season. Last night they faded against the Magic, squandering a chance to make up some ground in the West against one of the worst teams in the East. That makes four losses in a row and 5 of 6 overall.

New Orleans didn’t really do anything to improve at the break and that may cost them a shot at the playoffs given the way OKC made moves while Phoenix took a step back. 9th spot looks like it is all theirs.
Anthony Davis might well have been the MVP of the first half but he missed a few games before the break and did not look sharp against Orlando. More troublesome was how bad their defense was. They lost to Orlando despite the fact that the Magic made just three free throws and only one more three.

The main culprit was giving up 50 shooting from the field. Now they have to turn around on the road with no rest.
Miami
In a surprise move the Heat made moves designed to make a go of it this season acquiring the brothers Dragic at the break. That shores up the point guard position and gives them some depth as they can now not be so reliant on mercurial Mario Chalmers. The early results were positive as the Heat beat the Knicks easily on Friday, without any Dragic’s in the lineup. This looks like the game when they will start to play with their new toys and hope to continue to climb the ladder in the East.
Key to that pursuit is Dwyane Wade – I think the fact that we was ready to go after the break influenced the Heat’s decision not to write off the season.

Further, the addition of Goran Dragic should help to create more opportunities for emerging center Hassan Whiteside, who did not show much rust against New York. Miami may not have great depth but their first unit can compete in the East.
