Here’s a look at four bench bosses with a shot at taking home the Coach of the Year award for the upcoming season.

Tom Thobodeau, Chicago Bulls (+700)

The Bulls’ bench boss is already widely regarded as one of the best in the business. Now he faces one of his sternest tests with the Cleveland Cavaliers loading up in the offseason. However, Chicago gets back franchise point guard Derrick Rose to help them compete.

If Thibodeau can lead his team to another division crown and finish ahead of the Cavaliers in the standings, there would be no shortage of voters putting the former Celtics assistant atop their ballots.

Jeff Hornacek, Phoenix Suns (+1200)

The Suns enjoyed one of the greatest improvements year-over-year of any team in the association, and they did so with a rookie head coach. Now in Jeff Hornacek’s second year with the team, many are citing the Suns as a prime candidate for a regression.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that the team got only 43 games out of its top play in Erik Bledsoe a year ago. With a full year of Bledsoe in the fold, the Suns could see another improvement to their win total, and figure to again compete for a spot in the postseason.

Stan Van Gundy, Detroit Pistons (+6500)

The Pistons haven’t been shy about spending money in free agency, even if it sometimes feels like they’re just throwing a bunch of names at the wall and seeing what sticks. Either way, there’s a fair bit of talent on the roster at the moment for new head coach Stan Van Gundy to work with.

Widely regarded as one of the smartest coaches in the business, if Van Gundy can finally get this group to live up to its potential, they shouldn’t have trouble climbing into the playoffs in the Eastern Conference. That kind of turnaround would have onlookers remembering just how good a coach Van Gundy is.

Frank Vogel, Indiana Pacers (+7000)

There’s certainly a fair bit of a risk with this wager, as Vogel may have lost the room in the second half of last season. However, the step back the team took could also be blamed on the likely concussion suffered by starting center Roy Hibbert.

The Eastern Conference still isn’t strong, so Vogel still has a chance to make some noise with this Pacers club, even without Paul George. If the team can remain in the hunt for a spot in the top four in the East and then push through when George returns, Vogel would get some strong consideration.

David Joerger, Memphis Grizzlies (+10000)

It was a tale of two seasons for the Grizzlies a year ago – with Marc Gasol, and without him. The team’s won/loss record wasn’t enviable when the big Spaniard sat with an injury, but the Grizzlies were as good as any team in the league with him in the lineup.

Some bad breaks and questionable officiating led to an ousting in the first round of the playoffs a year ago, but don’t be fooled – this team is a title contender.

With the addition of veteran Vince Carter to provide scoring off the bench, Memphis figures to fight for a spot in the top four in the always tough Western Conference, and with a roster that lacks an obvious star, Joerger would get a lot of the credit.
