Denver head coach George Karl will be looking for win 1,001 when the Denver Nuggets take the floor Sunday afternoon against the New York Knicks in their only appearance at Madison Square Garden this season.

After a poor showing on Wednesday, going 2 of 10 from the field and finishing with a season-low five points, Chauncey Billups scored 21 points and Gary Forbes had 15 in place of an injured Carmelo Anthony as the Nuggets snapped a two-game losing with a 123-116 win over Toronto on Friday.

Anthony, who is averaging a team-high 22.8 points, missed a game for the first time this season after being scratched on Wednesday with inflammation in his right knee and is considered day-to-day.

Denver’s seven-game win streak came to an end losing to Charlotte 100-98 on Tuesday.

The Nuggets are averaging 98.0 points on the road compared to an NBA-best 111.4 at home.

As for the Knicks, they extended their win streak to seven — its longest winning streak since Jan 2006—on Amare Stoudemire’s seventh straight 30-plus point game, as New York topped the Washington Wizards 101-95 on Friday. All five Knicks starters scored in double figures.

In addition, the Knicks have also won eight consecutive road games, the team’s second longest, behind a franchise-record 13-game run back in 1969.

So to say that this match up will be a thriller, may be an understatement as both teams seem to be red-hot at the moment and are mortal enemies, ala what went down in NBA history as the  Knicks–Nuggets brawl of 2006.

The two met early this season in Denver with the Nuggets edging out a 120-118 win on Raymond Felton’s 3-pointer and Billups free throw with one second left to play.

New York ranks second in scoring in the paint, putting up 46.8 points per game. A strong frontcourt is led by Stoudemire who is averaging 34.4 points per game and has hit double-figures in rebounding in five of his last seven starts. Denver’s Nene will have the dauntless task of matching up against the 6-foot-10 brute.

The Nuggets will also need to defend against a pair of very good 3-point shooters in Wilson Chandler and Danilo Gallinari who can hit them hard from the perimeter.

As for the Knicks, their biggest concern — less the missing Anthony –will be to limit their turnovers, an area they seem to be struggling with an average of 15 per contest, including 20 in their last outing.

They will also need to be wary of Nuggets’ forward Al Harrington who broke out of a slump Friday at Toronto, shooting 12-of-19 for 31 points and was 6-of-11 from three-point range.

Both teams are playing well and have numerous weapons that can wreak havoc on the opposition. However, without the outside shooting threat of Anthony, I am giving the edge to New York, as I am not sure the Nuggets’ Nene matches up well with Stoudemire.

NBA Gambling Trends:

DEN are 5-15-2 ATS in their last 22 road games.
NY are 12-2 ATS in their last 14 games overall.
