Regular Season Records: Dallas Mavericks 49-33; San Antonio Spurs 62-20

No shock that the Spurs have the best record in the West, and in the NBA for that matter, still led by the original Big 3 of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili. However, this season the Spurs are much deeper and have to rely less on these guys to win.

This can be seen in the regular season, especially in the games against the Mavs, which the Spurs swept this season (4-0).

The Mavs ended the season well winning 6 of their last 10 games, but lost their last one meaning the have the unenviable task of taking on the Spurs. Still, Dirk Nowitzki had a big season and Monta Ellis stepped in as the 2nd scorer and averaged 19 ppg. Still, do the Mavs have a chance?

Not only did the Spurs win all 4 games against the Mavs this season, but have won 9 straight against them overall. The Mavs have a tall task in this series, as they have a decent offense, but they only rank 20th in the league in opponents’ points allowed.

On the other side of the coin it would be an understatement to say that San Antonio is a balanced squad, as they rank 6th in the league in both scoring and opponents’ points allowed.

I mentioned before that the Spurs are deep, as they have 6 players that are averaging in double figures. Obviously, the Dallas D has to key on the Big 3, but in the first game this season Danny Green came off the bench to score 22 points and in the last game Patty Mills scored 26 points in filling in for the injured Tony Parker.

Dallas also has to play solid D the whole game, as the Spurs The Spurs have the highest-scoring bench in the league at 45.1 ppg.

Dirk and Monta Ellis have to score and shoot the rock well and Vince Carter and Shaun Marion will have to play like they did when they were in their prime.

Marion will also have to play solid D on Kawhi Leonard, which is a good match up since they are similar players, but the Matrix is 13 years older and not the player he once was.

Dirk has to carry the Mavs in this series for Dallas to have any chance to advance.

His match up facing Duncan is an interesting one, as in their head to head match ups each averaged 18.5 ppg, but Duncan pulled down an average of almost 7 boards.

NBA Playoff Betting Prediction:

I think Ellis and Dirk will have a big game at home and the Mavs will win one game, but that is it. The Spurs are simply too deep and too good on both sides of the ball and they will win this series in 5 games.
