Friday NBA Betting – Streaking Mavs Visit Hawks

All is good in Dallas’  neighborhood nowadays as Mark Cuban’s boys have won five straight and the earlier struggles have been forgotten.

Now they are back to being a Western contender and a mixed bag of a roster that just might have enough to make things interesting in the playoffs.

Team records:

Atlanta: 36-20 SU, 34-22 ATS
Betting Odds: Hawks listed as 3-point favorites
Next up: Dallas home to New Orleans, Sunday, February 28, Atlanta home to Milwaukee, Sunday, February 28

On Friday, they’ll face the continually improving Atlanta Hawks. The Hawks have won two straight and are very tough at home – especially against Western opponents. They are 10-1 against the West at Phillips Arena and will hope to improve on that on Friday.

What’s Happening With The Mavericks

The Mavericks picked up quite a bit in their trade with the Washington Wizards, although Caron Butler has been the highlighted piece.

Center Brendan Haywood gives the Mavs a competent big man and in the West, a good man in the middle always helps. Haywood provides interior defense, rebounding and some scoring, which the Mavs will love to have. Butler and Deshawn Stevenson also do the same.

In one trade, the Mavs not only improved their scoring, they also added depth, size and defense. If the chemistry works out, this could be an interesting group to watch down the stretch of the season.

With more weapons around, there is less pressure on point guard Jason Kidd to score and he will now be able to be the big-time playmaker we know he’s capable of being.

What’s Happening With the Hawks

The Hawks are just 6-4 in their last 10 but not to worry. They are still just two games behind the Orlando Magic in the Southeast and they are still on pace to top their 47 wins from last year.

But at a closer look, the Hawks have been mediocre of late. Since that dazzling 19-6 start, the Hawks are just 17-14.

The Hawks are struggling right now and a boost at the trade deadline would have been welcomed. The team is trying to woo center Zydrunas Ilgauskas but the reality is that this team – that scratched and clawed to top Minnesota 98-92 at home on earlier this week – is a little gassed right now. They are healthy, but they have hit the wall a little bit.

Outlook & Pick

The Hawks are a good team against the West but most of the damage was done earlier in the year. Now that the Mavericks are rolling and the Hawks are reeling a bit, the Mavs can return the favor to the Hawks for their earlier loss when the two teams met in Dallas.

The Mavericks are 18-12 on the road, which is the fourth-best road record in the NBA. They’ll use their depth to get by the Hawks on Friday night.

Pick: Mavericks

Dallas is on a five game winning streak and playing at a very high level. Atlanta needs this game to keep Orlando in their sights in the Southeast. I think the Hawks get it done at home tonight.
