Iverson is averaging 18.6 points a game for Detroit, with 5.7 assists a game. He scored 38 points in an overtime loss to Utah on Friday, then followed that up with 10 points against Atlanta in an 85-78 defeat on Sunday. Since he’s not an ideal point guard, the Pistons have been using Rodney Stuckey in that position. Stuckey has actually been quite a revelation, with a 4-to-1 assist-turnover ratio since he’s been in the starting lineup.
Even so, Detroit has amassed just a 10-11 record since acquiring Iverson, which is in sharp contrast to the way Denver’s fortunes have changed since they got rid of Iverson. Do you think those occurrences are just a coincidence?
No, because Iverson, who was actually once named the defensive player of the year in the Big East, is an illustration of the fact that just because you can steal the ball a couple of times a game doesn’t mean you’re a defender. Indeed, when Mike Bibby of the Hawks went wild with six three-pointers on Sunday, coach Michael Curry went nuts. Right now Detroit is allowing its opponents to hit 45.6% of their shots, and there is nothing special about that.
If the Pistons aren’t defending out there on the perimeter that’s good news for Chicago, because the Bulls don’t have any inside scoring. If there is anywhere they can be effective it’s out there, with Ben Gordon able to throw up three-pointers with some efficiency (41.3%) and Andres Nocioni sure to have more of an opportunity to do it as he picks up some of the slack left by Drew Gooden’s absence.
Detroit has quite a bit they still have to prove but early indications are that the three-guard lineup, with the 6’5″ Stuckey and the 6’6″ Richard Hamilton, could ultimately be successful. We just don’t trust Chicago on the road – the Bulls have dropped five of six on the trail, both straight-up and against the number, and it’s been over a month since they have gotten to within seven points in one of their road losses. Vinny Del Negro’s team is short-handed right now, especially if Tyrus Thomas, the thin, disappointing “power” forward, is still sitting out with his concussion.
