The Lakers have a new challenger in the NBA’s Pacific Division. No, it isn’t the Golden State Warriors, but the Phoenix Suns who are right up there with the defending NBA champs, going into Friday’s action a half game ahead of the Lakers.

Los Angeles is the league’s leading rebounding team, averaging 46.3 boards per game, whole Golden State is last in that category, at 37.6. That is one of the reasons the Warriors also allow just a shade under 50% shooting on the part of opponents, as they are allowing easy second-shot opportunities. One of the areas where the Lakers have improved statistically is on defense, where opponents are shooting just 42% against them, and they get the opportunity to show what they can do on the road after a five-game home stand that began with a loss to the Houston Rockets, and concluded with four wins against teams that failed to crack the 100-mark.

The other night Golden State got 42 points from Monta Ellis and still lost by 14 points to San Antonio. This is not a very deep team, and there have been injury problems that have led to the absence of several people, including Raja Bell, Andris Biedrins, Devean George and Ronny Turiaf. There are some good role players there.

What the Warriors have is a guard in Ellis who has taken it upon himself to score more and more after the trade of Stephen Jackson. In fact, since Jackson was dealt away, Ellis has averaged almost 31 points a game. The other guard, rookie Stephen Curry, has hit double figures in his last six games and has maintained a 2-to-1 assist-turnover ratio.

The Lakers have dealt with the loss of Pau Gasol pretty well, and now he is back from his hamstring injury, scoring 24 points in his first game back and grabbing 16 rebounds in his last game against the Knicks on Tuesday. Early indications are that Andrew Bynum is coming into his own at center, as he is scoring just under 20 points a game on 58% shooting with 10.9 rebounds. His numbers have been reduced as he has accommodated Gasol’s presence. Obviously the Lakers will be better as a team with both of them contributing.

The Lakers have dominated this series, winning 14 of the last 16 meetings. Even though Phil Jackson has not been pleased with what he’s gotten from the bench, with a team that is well-rested and healthier, I expect them to take advantage, and we’ll be looking for them to score a double-digit win in the BetUS NBA pro basketball betting odds.
