George Karl is back behind the bench after battling throat cancer. Karl missed the final month and a half of last season; he was supposedly close to returning to action before Denver was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by Utah.

The biggest change for Denver hasn’t happened yet, and whether or not it actually happens remains to be seen. Carmelo Anthony has been thrown around in trade rumors for months now; he was reportedly close to being shipped out in a four-team deal involving the Nets or Knicks, but the deal broke down.

Will Anthony be a malcontent in the meantime? That’s something Denver certainly can’t afford from its leading scorer. The Nuggets won 53 games and the Northwest Division last year, but three teams behind them won at least 50 games. Even the slightest stumble could knock this squad out of the playoffs. Despite the distractions with Carmelo, Denver proceeded with business as usual. Chauncy Billups is back for another tour at point guard while Nene returns at center.

Kenyon Martin is back in the fold but will miss the beginning of the season following knee surgery. Martin is rock solid when he’s on the floor, but the forward has missed an almost comical number of games in his career.

Harrington was brought in to fill the void while Martin is hurt. He brings a little more scoring to the table—something Denver already has in abundance—but won’t be as effective on the glass as Martin. It might be moot anyway. Harrington has always been an injury prone player himself, and he’s already dealing with a foot injury that will likely cost him some games. Hopefully, for Denver’s sake, it can get 82 games out of Martin and Harrington combined—but that already looks like an impossibility.

Denver has won at least 50 games in three straight seasons, and made the playoffs in seven straight. If Anthony remains on the team, both streaks should remain intact. He can opt out at the end of the season, however, and if Denver doesn’t believe its in prime position to win a championship, their franchise player will likely be sent packing at the deadline.

Surprising stat: Billups set a career high in points last season (19.6).
Strengths: Scoring, scoring, scoring.
Weaknesses: Power forward is already depleted with Martin and Harrington injured. The Carmelo situation is hanging over the team’s head.
Playoffs? If Anthony is on board for the full season.
Win total projection for 2010-11: 50-55 games
