New coach Flip Saunders has his work cut out.

This team basically has eaten coaches alive in this decade (Darrell Walker, Leonard Hamilton, Doug Collins, Eddie Jordan, Ed Tapscott), but Saunders has a chance to last a while if Gilbert Arenas and Brendan Haywood can get back to 85 to 90 percent efficiency as they return from injuries. Key players added – Randy Foye, Mike Miller

Key players lost – None

The offense will run through Arenas, who in the last year and a half has had three surgical procedures on the same knee. No one really knows how the knee is holding up because Arenas refuses to talk to the media, but if he’s healthy and can stand the pounding for an entire season, the Wiz can make a move up in the East after winning only 19 games last season.

The Wiz are holding their breath on Brendan Haywood, who is back at center after missing most of last season with a wrist injury but recently injured an ankle. Assuming he’s OK, he and Arenas will be joined in the starting lineup by Mike Miller (acquired in a trade with Minnesota), Caron Butler and the venerable Antawn Jamison.

Not a bad starting group if they can stay together.

Surprising stat: The Wizards were the worst team in the league ATS last season, covering only 31 times.

Strengths: It all starts and ends with Arenas. If he can still slash, he’ll draw double-teams and create shots for his teammates . . .

Weaknesses: . . . if Arenas’ comeback is a failure, they are pretty much screwed, especially defensively.

Playoffs? Not out of the question
