Usually the best way to figure out which team has gotten the better of an NBA trade is to just determine which team got the best player involved.

But are the Magic really better off with Vince Carter in the lineup rather than Courtney Lee and Rafer Alston?

Key players added – Vince Carter

Key players lost – Courtney Lee, Rafer Alston, Hedo Turkoglu

Carter brings dunks and offense at the off guard spot for the Magic, but he’s not the best guy to have on a team when things go bad –– just ask the fans in New Jersey.

Carter does give the Magic yet another perimeter slasher, and they will need that with the free agent departure of Hedo Turkoglu. Carter will need to share the ball with bomber Rashard Lewis and Jameer Nelson, and by the way Dwight Howard wasn’t too happy with the number of touches he got during the playoffs last season. The starting unit, which also will include solid defender Mickael Pietrus at the 3, could be more solid than last year’s but at the expense of depth.

Orlando was able to rain 3-pointers on and sneak past Garnett-less and dog-tired Boston in the Eastern Conference semis last season, and stunned just about everyone by keeping the LeBron and the Cavs in check before the inevitable fade against the Lakers.

It’ll be fun to see if the Magic can keep things together and be another playoff force come next April.

Surprising stat: Orlando couldn’t cover the spread in its first four (Philadelphia) or final three (Lakers) playoff games last season, but in between covered the number 12 of 17 times.

Strengths: Howard is tremendous deterrence to anyone who wants to go to the hole, and his life is made easier by Lewis’s ability to stretch defenses. That combination basically beat Boston in Game 7 last season.

Weaknesses: Let’s see if Howard stays happy when Carter decides he wants 25 shots a game. Let’s see if Carter is happy when Howard starts demanding the ball more.

Playoffs? Best team in the Southeast. Top 3 seed unless Howard misses time to injury.
