2015 NASCAR SPRINT CUP STANDINGS (Link)

Last Sunday’s thrilling finish in the Daytona 500 to open a new season of racing in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup series saw Joey Logano outduel both Kevin Harvick and Dale Earnhardt Jr. to take the checkered flag in The Great American Race.

Turning to this Sunday afternoon’s race, the following are my top picks for favorite, contender and longshot based on current betting odds as provided by Bovada.

The Favorite (odd of less than 10/1)

I liked the way that Kevin Harvick came right out of the gate with a strong run at Daytona after locking-up last season’s Sprint Cup title with a winning performance in the final race of the year at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

The No. 4 car has been listed as a +600 co-favorite to win this time around along with Jeff Gordon and the No. 24 car. Harvick found the Winner’s Circle five times last season starting with a victory at Phoenix in the second point-race of the season.

As far as his recent performance at Atlanta, he has finished in the top 10 in six of his last eight Sprint Cup races here.

The Contender (odds from 10/1 to 19/1)

One of three other drivers that pushed Harvick for last season’s title in that final race of the year was Denny Hamlin, only to finish third in the final Sprint Cup standings.

He got his No. 11 car off to a solid start this year with a fourth-place finish in last Sunday’s race.

The odds that he goes on to win this Sunday have been set at +1000 and there is some solid value in that number. Hamlin has been solid at this track in recent years with a victory in this race in 2012 and third-place finish in last year’s race.

The Longshot (odds 20/1 or greater)

The betting odds for this race really drop off fast following Kyle Larson at +1500, so I am banking on veteran experience in this week’s longshot pick. Tony Stewart has gone through the ringer last season with a number of issues.

Add in the fact that the No. 14 car only lasted 72 laps of last Sunday’s race and it is easy to see why he is listed at +3000 betting odds to win this Sunday.

Stewart still remains the type of driver that always has a chance to win when he gets behind the wheel and I like the added value to these odds that is gained from a Sprint Cup victory at this track in 2010 followed by a third-place finish in 2011.
