Kevin Harvick continues to prove why he is the best driver in the Sprint Cup series right now with a second-straight victory after finishing first last Sunday at Phoenix. Jamie McMurray turned in a strong run to finish second and my favorite longshot Ryan Newman posted his second-straight third-place finish.

Turning to this Sunday afternoon’s race, the following are my top picks for favorite, contender and longshot based on current betting odds as provided by Sportsbook.ag.

The Favorite (odd of less than 10/1)

A California native son returns home this week as a +600 second-favorite to win Sunday’s race. Jimmie Johnson has already posted a Sprint Cup victory this season at Atlanta and I like his chances as my top favorite to take the checkered flag again this Sunday at Fontana.

The No. 48 car has struggled a bit in its last two races, but it is returning to a track where Johnson’s averaging finishing position is an impressive 6.6.

He has five career victories here in a Sprint Cup race and from 2007 to 2012 he did not finish outside the top 10 in 10 straight point races.

The Contender (odds from 10/1 to 19/1)

Denny Hamlin has been hit or miss through his first four races with two top-five finishes and two other finishes outside the top 20. Regardless of these inconsistencies, anytime I can get longer odds on the No. 11 car I usually jump at the chance as is the case this week with +1800 betting odds to win on Sunday.

[dfads params=’groups=63791&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Hamlin missed last year’s race at Fontana due to an injury and in his two prior races here he posted disappointing finishes after starting from the pole position.

While this tends to drain a bit of the value in these odds, he did finish eighth or better in three of five races at Fontana from 2008 to 2010.

The Longshot (odds 20/1 or greater)

I cannot help but get the feeling that the third time will be the charm for Ryan Newman as my top valued longshot.

Despite posting strong finishes in three-straight races this season, the No. 31 car is still not getting any respect from the Oddsmakers at +3000 betting odds to break through with a victory this week. Along with current form, I have Newman’s past performance at this track adding even more value to these odds.

He has yet to win a Sprint Cup race at Fontana, but with the exception of last season’s 20th-place finish, he has posted four top-10 finishes in his previous four races including back-to-back fifth-place finishes in this race in 2010 and 2011.
