2012 Kobalt Tools 400 Predictions – Betting Preview + Picks + Odds

The Sprint Cup series remains out west this week for the running of the Kobalt Tools 400, which is the third point race of this year’s Sprint Cup racing season.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Kobolt Tools 400 Preview and Prediction
Race: Kobolt Tools 400
Date: Sunday, March 11, 2012
Time: 2:30 p.m. (ET)
Broadcast: FOX

Denny Hamlin was the big winner in last Sunday’s race in Phoenix with Kevin Harvick finishing second and Greg Biffle taking third.

Jimmie Johnson bounced back from his disastrous showing at Daytona with a fourth-place finish last week.

The following is a closer look at our favorite, contender, and longshot picks for Sunday’s race with odds provided by Bovada.

The Favorite (odds of less than 10/1)

You could not script a worse start to this year’s Sprint Cup season then Jimmie Johnsons’.

First, he wrecked on the second lap of the Daytona 500 to finish 42nd in a field of 43. Next, his racing team was docked 25 points for an illegal modification to his car. The No.48 car’s fourth-place finish last week at Phoenix is a very positive sign.

He will look to ride this change in momentum as a 6/1 co-favorite to win this Sunday at Las Vegas. This will be the Sprint Cup series 11th race at this track and Johnson has already won four of the previous 10. Last year he struggled to a 16th-place finish after starting 14th, but he won in 2010 and has an overall finishing position here of 10.6.

The Contender (odds of 10/1 to 19/1)

Kasey Kahne is considered by many as one of the best ‘young guns’ in the Sprint Cup series, but 2011 was a season to forget with a disappointing 14th-place finish in the point standings. This season has also gotten off to a rough start with two dismal finishes, but he remains a solid contender to win this week at 12/1.

The reason he made this week’s list is because he is overdue for a big week and Las Vegas has been one of his better tracks during his Sprint Cup career.

Kahne has finished in the top 10 four times in his eight races at this track with two of them actually being top-five finishes.

The Longshot (odds of 20/1 +)

If you are looking for value in a steep longshot this week, then take a hard look at Martin Truex Jr. driving the No.56 car at 30/1.

This will be his seventh season driving in the Sprint Cup series and he is easily off his best start with a 12th-place finish at Daytona followed by a seventh-place finish in last week’s race. [ad-8757089]

Truex posted a strong performance at Las Vegas last year with a sixth-place finish after starting ninth. It was his first top-10 finish at this track in six career starts.
