Race: Subway Fresh Fit 500 – Phoenix International Raceway
Date: Sunday, February 27, 2011
Time: 3:14 PM EST (scheduled Green Flag)
TV: 3:00 PM EST on FOX

The Sprint Cup Series used to travel to Fontana right after the Daytona 500, but the 2011 schedule realignment has the circuit visiting Phoenix this week instead.

Rather than being billed as the first night race of the season, Phoenix is now the first “regular” race of the season – that is, a non-restrictor-plate race. The weather forecast is also variable for Sunday’s race, with colder temperatures and a chance of rain both Saturday and Sunday.

Safe Bets:

1. Kyle Busch (6/1): Kyle has been dominant in the Truck and Nationwide Series this weekend and qualified 4th for Sunday’s race. Though he hasn’t won a Cup race at Phoenix since 2005 (and that was the November race), this could be the year he changes that statistic. Busch finished 8th in this race last year.

2. Carl Edwards (8/1): Edwards won the November race at PIR from the pole and scored the pole for Sunday’s race as well. He finished 7th in the spring race last year and his sponsor, Subway, is also the presenting race sponsor. Edwards seems to have momentum on his side this weekend.

Dark Horse:

1. Joey Logano (22/1): After his rookie season in the Cup Series, Logano finished 10th and 3rd in his 2010 PIR Cup starts. He qualified 6th for Sunday’s race.

Summary: This is the last race at PIR on the current track surface; an all-new pavement will greet teams when we return to the desert in November.

Jimmie Johnson, the winner of four of the last seven Phoenix races, qualified 28th for Sunday’s race.
