Race: 2011 NASCAR Sprint All-Star Challenge at Charlotte Motor Speedway
Date: Saturday, May 21, 2011
Time: 9:00 PM ET (following Showdown Race)
TV: 7:00 PM ET on SPEED – starting with Showdown Race

The All-Stars include drivers who’ve won at least one race in 2010 or 2011 and those who’ve won either the All-Star Race or the Cup championship in the last 10 years. Of the estimated 22 drivers in the field, three will not be known until just before the race, including the 1st- and 2nd-place finishers in the preliminary Showdown Race and the winner of the fan vote.

Among the drivers not currently in the All-Star Race, but hoping to make the field through either of those two methods, are Joey Logano, Martin Truex Jr., Brian Vickers, and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Safe Bets:

1. Jimmie Johnson (7/2): It’s hard to bet against the winningest driver on the circuit at this track, with six wins in points-paying races and the most laps led, 1385 in 19 starts, averaging more than 70 laps per race. Johnson also won the All-Star Race twice, in 2003 and 2006, and led more than half the laps last year, winning segments 2 and 3, though he didn’t walk away with the trophy.

2. Kyle Busch (5/1): In regular season races, Busch has notched seven straight top-10 finishes at CMS including a 2nd and three 3rd-place finishes. He’s never won the All-Star Race, but he won at least one segment in each of the four All-Star events from 2006-2009. Busch thought he had this race won last year and will be even more determined to close the deal this time around.

Dark Horse:

1. Joey Logano (no odds available): Logano has to race his way out of the Showdown to compete in the All-Star Race, but I think he can do it, having finished 3rd in this race last year. Joey has the best average finish among active drivers at Charlotte (in points-paying races), even better than Jimmie Johnson, who’s won six times here.

In four Charlotte starts, his best finish is a 5th and his worst a 13th, and he’s completed all 1295 of the 1295 laps he’s run in the regular races.

Summary: With no points and a million-dollar payday on the line, drivers will be going for broke on the track Saturday night. The format calls for a total of 100 laps, consisting of four segments – 50 laps, 20 laps, 20 laps, and a final 10-lap shoot-out.

Jeff Gordon has the most All-Star wins among active drivers with three, while Jimmie Johnson and Mark Martin have two each.
