Race: Showtime Southern 500 – Darlington Raceway
Date: Saturday, May 7, 2011
Time: 7:45 PM EST (scheduled Green Flag)
TV: 7:30 PM EST on FOX

Although this race still bears the famous moniker, NASCAR took away the Labor Day date back in 2004. This is one of only a few venues that the Cup series visits just once per year with no return date later in the season. Drivers consider this one of the hardest races to win, making it one of the most prestigious as well.

Safe Bets:

1. Kyle Busch (6/1): Though it was a rain-shortened practice Friday morning, Busch was third-fastest on the speed chart, coming off his impressive win at Richmond last week. Busch won at Darlington in 2008 and finished 7th here last year; he currently sits third in Sprint Cup points. Nascar Betting

2. Denny Hamlin (8/1): Hamlin’s second-place finish at Richmond should provide some much-needed momentum heading to a track where he’s had success. Hamlin swept this track last year, winning both Friday’s Nationwide race and Saturday’s Cup race. He was fourth-fastest in practice Friday morning.

Dark Horse:

1. Greg Biffle (30/1): It’s worth noting that Greg Biffle has climbed from 32nd to 14th in points from the start of the season until now. In ten Cup starts at Darlington, Biffle has two wins (2005-2006) and has led 639 laps. His best finish in his last four Darlington starts was an 8th in 2009.

Summary: This is the second night race in a row for the Cup Series following last weekend’s Saturday night brawl at Richmond, where Joe Gibbs racing teammates Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin finished 1-2.

Following next Sunday’s race at Dover it will be time for the non-points-paying All-Star Race.
