2011 Daytona 500 Predictions – Betting Preview + Picks + Odds

Preview: It’s Daytona, but it isn’t. The offseason repaving project at Daytona Speedway produced a smooth new surface that has generated a new style of racing. Rather than the big multi-car drafting packs that we’ve become accustomed to, teams have found that two-car ‘tandems’ are the fastest way to get around the track this year.

As Cup Driver Clint Bowyer said, “Who would have thought in a million years spending $20 million on improvements would create some headaches for you where you have to make some pretty major adjustments like they’ve been having to do all week long?” So it’s a wide-open field this year, as even the most experienced plate-racing pros are learning a new style of “offset” drafting.

Kurt Busch won last weekend’s Bud Shootout and the first Gatorade Duel race; Jeff Burton won the second. Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon scored the front row in qualifying, but Earnhardt subsequently crashed in practice and will have to start at the rear of the field.

Kurt Busch, who qualified third, will move up to start P1 alongside Gordon.

Safe Bets:

1. Kevin Harvick (8/1): Harvick has won twice at Daytona, including the 2007 Daytona 500 from a 34th-place starting spot and the Coke 400 last July from the pole. He also has a restrictor plate win at Talladega. Harvick qualified 14th for the race after finishing seventh in the Bud Shootout.

The RCR cars have been strong in Speedweeks but, like everyone else, Harvick will have to find the right drafting partner at the end.

2. Jeff Gordon (11/1): Gordon is the restrictor plate racing leader in NASCAR among active drivers, with six Cup wins at Daytona and six at Talladega. Gordon is working with a new crew chief this year, but so far the pairing seems to be a good one. Jeff finished sixth in the Bud Shootout.

Dark Horse:

1. Greg Biffle (22/1): Biffle has never won the Daytona 500, but he did win the Pepsi 400 here in 2003. Greg finished third in last year’s Daytona 500 and fifth in the Bud Shootout, along with qualifying ninth.

The Fords have proven to be great “pushers” in the two-car tandems this week, but it remains to be seen if one of them can become the “pushee” when the checkered flag falls.

Summary: Check Saturday’s final practice times to help with your wagering decisions.
