Race: The Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway
Date: Saturday, July 4, 2009
Time: 8:19 PM EST (scheduled green flag)
TV: 6:30 PM EST on TNT
Odds: Updated Coke Zero 400 Odds

Preview: The Coke Zero 400 is a Saturday night race, an impound race, and the first race utilizing NASCAR’s new double-file restarts on a restrictor plate track. Dale Earnhardt Jr. led the most laps in this race last year, but Kyle Busch came away with the win. Matt Kenseth is the most recent DIS winner, starting the 2009 season with a victory in the Daytona 500.

Safe Bets:

1. Kyle Busch (+700): As mentioned above, Busch won this race last year and also has two second-place finishes at Daytona. Busch has led double-digit laps in his last four Daytona appearances and he’s also won at Talladega, the other plate-racing track on the NASCAR circuit.

2. Tony Stewart (+700): It’s hard not to choose Stewart as a favorite anywhere right now with six top-5 finishes in his last eight starts. At Daytona, Stewart’s won twice, including back-to-back wins in the July race (formerly the Pepsi 400) in 2005 and 2006.

Dark Horse:

1. Clint Bowyer (+3000): Although RCR has been a step off the pace this year overall, Bowyer is the surprising name atop the career average finish category at Daytona with an 11.1. In seven DIS starts, Bowyer has five top-10 finishes and ran ninth in this race last year, as well as fourth in the ‘09 Daytona 500.

Summary: The word of the day at Daytona during practice Thursday was ’slick,’ with a hot, slippery race track and cars slipping and sliding. Look for tire wear to be an issue throughout the weekend as well.
