ATS Matchup Insight | CappersPicks Insider Preview

Milwaukee (52-41) has lost nine of their last 10 games and season-high five straight.

Pitching has been a problem as it was with a seven-run eighth in a 9-1 loss to Philadelphia on Thursday.

As a team, the Brewers rank second in runs scored in the National League, and on top of that has only scored two or fewer in six of its last seven contests.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals (50-43) have won six of their 10 games in the month of July and are seven games above .500, two games behind National League Central-leading Milwaukee.

After suffering a 9-1 setback to Pittsburgh in the finale of their four-game series Thursday, the Cards will hope they can get a boost from the return of Joe Kelly, who is coming of the 90-day DL and is slated to take the mound on Friday.

The right-hander is 1-5 with a 4.17 ERA in nine career games against the Brewers and
went 1-1 with a 0.59 ERA and nine strikeouts in 15.1 innings before suffering a hamstring injury on April 16. He is coming off a strong Triple-A rehab outing with Memphis on Sunday, allowing one run in 4 1/3 innings.

Milwaukee will counter with Yovani Gallardo who is 5-5 with a 3.45 ERA and has 83 strikeouts in 109.2 innings.

Gallardo has struggle against St. Louis, and is 1-11 with a 6.34 ERA in 18 career starts against the Cardinals. The righty has to accept a no-decision in Milwaukee’s 5-3 win April 28. He allowed two runs on eight hits in seven innings in a no-decision against Cincinnati on Sunday, following a disastrous outing against Colorado.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Brewers –

Kelly’s last start came against Milwaukee as he permitted one run on three hits in four innings. As a team, St. Louis is 5-1 in Kelly’s last six starts during game one of a series.

The Brewers are 2-6 in Gallardo’s last eight starts, so I am going with the Brewers here.
