2010 Interleague play starts when the Boston Red Sox visit Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia to play the Phillies tonight at 7:05 P.M. in the first of a three game weekend series.

Boston has not gotten off to the start they had hoped for and after the first 40+ games of the season they are 22-20, 8 ½ games in back of Tampa Bay in fourth place in the AL East. They come into this game with a three game winning streak after beating the Yankees 7-6 on Wednesday and taking two from Minnesota over the past two days. On the year they are 3-3 as a dog and are 21-17-3 against the over/under line. In their last eight road games they are 2-6.

John Lackey will be on the mound for the Red Sox tonight. In eight starts this season he is 4-2 with a 4.86 ERA. In his last outing against Detroit on May 16th, he gave up nine hits and five earned runs in seven innings of work. Lifetime against the Phillies, Lackey is 1-0 with an ERA of 1.42.

The Red Sox have a team batting average of .270, ranking them sixth in the AL, but they are third in runs scored with 219. Six players in their lineup already have 20+ RBI’s led by J.D. Drew’s 27. Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis lead the team with eight homeruns apiece.

Philadelphia remains atop the NL East with an overall record of 25-15. They have a four game lead over Florida and a 4 ½ game lead over Atlanta. At 13-7, the Phillies have a slightly better record on the road than their 12-8 record at Citizen Bank Park. As a favorite they are 16-13 and are 19-20 against the over/under line. They have not had too much success against Boston in the past as they are 3-13 in the last 16 games they played.

It is Cole Hamels turn in the rotation as he makes his ninth start of the season. In his first eight starts he is 4-2 with and 4.42 ERA. In his last game on May 16th against Milwaukee, he went 6.2 innings giving up six hits and two earned runs, getting the win. In his career he is 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA against the Red Sox.

The Phillies are tied with the Dodgers atop the NL with a team batting average of .275. They also lead the league in runs scored with 219. They have three players in their lineup with 30+ RBI’s led by Shane Victorino’s 32. Chase Utley leads the team with 10 homeruns in 140 at bats.

Boston has won this series five straight times, but Lackey has not been consistent this year while Hamels has looked sharp in his last few outings.

The Phillies bats carry them once again as they pound out a win in a high scoring affair.
