Monday night’s American League East battle has several storylines going for it. 
First off, there’s the basic Yankees/Jays rivalry, not the division’s biggest but certainly a storied one. Then there’s A.J. Burnett, a man now hated among Blue Jays fans. Lastly, there’s the overall pitching matchup. Brandon Morrow’s strengths and weaknesses are remarkably similar to Burnett’s, so this is almost a mirror match.
Morrow’s numbers are fairly pedestrian on paper but he’s been a much more effective pitcher since the start of June. He’s also 2-0 with a 2.77 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 13 innings since the All-Star break.
He’s been one of baseball’s top strikeout guys this season, whiffing 125 batters in 113 innings.
But Morrow carries some demons with him into the Bronx tonight. He’s been terrible on the road in 2010, going 1-5 with a 6.23 ERA. He visited Yankee Stadium last month and got roughed up for five runs and nine hits over six innings.
After getting absolutely lit up in June, A.J. Burnett has settled down.
He went 3-1 with a 2.00 ERA in five July starts. Hs home ERA is also more than two runs lower than his road ERA. Even though he’s had the odd bad start against Toronto, those outings usually come in Toronto with fans jeering him.
He should be fine at home tonight.
