Pirates vs Dodgers Baseball Picks

The Pirates have dug themselves a hole but it is possible they can make the NL Central a three team race if they can keep chipping away. With last night’s win over Los Angeles they have won 6 of 10 even though their offense and pitching have yet to click.

Pittsburgh

Runs will be at a premium this weekend against the Dodgers. They have gotten a bit of a lift from Ike Davis who has been much better since being exiled by the Mets, hitting .284. There are still too many holes in their lineup though.

If the Pirates are going to get back into the race in the NL Central they need their ace to start pitching better.

Francisco Liriano has yet to get a victory this season and his peripherals have not been very good.

How is this for some numbers – Liriano is 0-5 for the season, every game in which he has not picked up a decision the Pirates have won, so he has not been a terrible pitcher to back betting wise.

Los Angeles

Los Angeles slipped behind Colorado with last night’s loss. The weird thing about this Dodger team is that they have a losing record at home, which is going to make it hard to go on the kind of run they did last season.

They are a little dinges up with Carl Crawford, Juan Uribe and A.J. Ellis all on the DL – they all see regular playing time. Still this offense has plenty with Adrian Gonzalez and Yasiel Puig enjoying really good seasons.

Speedy Dee Gordon has cooled a bit but his 32 steals lead the Majors – by 13

Josh Beckett continued his renaissance by pitching a no hitter his last time out. He has won his last three starts and is helping to make the Dodgers rotation one of the best in the Majors.

Normally you might want to fade a starter after a superlative performance but the Pirates are a pretty light hitting team and there is no reason to think Beckett can not tame the Bucs.

The bigger concern might be that he threw more pitches in the last game than he has in any start this season.

There is surprising value with the home Dodgers in this one. They are starting to play better but there is enough respect for Liriano and the Pirates to make them playable.

Even though I know Liriano often gets let down by his teammates 0-5 is 0-5.

I have been burned before so I might wait until he actually notches one in the win column.

Total prediction:  Under
Score prediction:  Los Angeles 4 – Pittsburgh 2
