MLB Game Preview for August 28, 2010: Philadelphia Phillies @ San Diego Padres

This is the time of the year when the sports betting in baseball gets hot and heavy. As the sports landscape starts to shift to NFL betting and NCAA football betting, baseball teams looking to stay in the spotlight are clamoring for position and fighting for pennants and wild card berths.

The Philadelphia Phillies are making things extremely difficult on themselves. Just when they get within striking distance of the Atlanta Braves for the NL East pennant, Ryan Howard blows up and the Phillies drop an important series to the Astros. The Phillies entered the week only two games back of the Braves in the NL East, and ahead by a game in the NL wild card race. Ever since their meltdown against the Astros, the Phillies are now three games back of the Braves and are a half game back of the San Francisco Giants in the NL wild card.

To top it all off, the Phillies have lost six of their last ten and that includes a four game losing streak that started before the Houston series. Even with one of the best starting rotations in baseball, the wheels seem to be coming off in Philadelphia and they need a strong series against the NL West leading Padres to turn themselves around.

The San Diego Padres continue to defy the MLB betting experts by widening their lead in the NL West over the San Francisco Giants. The Padres have won seven of their last 10 games and that has pushed their lead in the NL West to six games.

The next closest team is the Colorado Rockies at 10 games back. The Padres seem to hitting on all cylinders, and they are right to excited about their prospects in the upcoming playoffs.

In this game the Padres are going to want to keep their momentum going and prove that they can compete against a tough NL opponent like the Phillies. This is the perfect kind of series to instill much needed confidence in the Padres bullpen, and get the Padres ready for a playoff-like atmosphere.

The Phillies are reaching the point of desperation. This team was supposed to win the NL East by a wide margin and challenge for a spot in the World Series. If the season ended today, the Phillies would not even be in the playoffs. They are feeling desperate, and they are going to play like they are desperate in this series.

The Phillies will be sending Joe Blanton to the mound. Blanton has a 5-6 record and a 5.32 ERA for his efforts this year. Blanton’s season has been a disappointment so far, but he has a 2-1 record in his last eight starts and the Phillies are hoping he can keep turning his game around.

The Padres will put Jon Garland on the hill with his 13-8 record and 3.25 ERA. Garland won his last start, and he is 7-2 at home. He is one of those Padre pitchers that just keeps rolling right along.

Pick: San Diego Padres 3-2
