The Philadelphia Phillies visit Nationals Park for a three game weekend series with Washington. Game 1 is scheduled for tonight at 7:05 P.M.

Philadelphia comes into this series riding an eight game winning streak including a sweep of the Rockies in four games and the Diamondbacks in three. The Phillies are now 56-46 overall and are just 2 ½ games in back of Atlanta in the NL East. They are 22-28 SU on the road and 40-31 ATS as the favorite. Against the over/under line they are 47-52-2 and the total has gone over in their last five games in Washington.

The Phillies are wasting little time in getting their most recent acquisition on the mound as Roy Oswalt gets the start tonight for his new team. With Houston, he was 6-12 with a 3.42 ERA in 20 starts. In his last outing he only lasted five innings, giving up nine hits and six earned runs in a loss to Cincinnati. Lifetime against the Nationals, Oswalt is 3-2 with an ERA of 3.52.

Over the last 10 games, Philadelphia has averaged 4.7 runs per game. Their team batting average is now .258, ranking them 9th in the NL and their 481 runs scored rank them third. Ryan Howard leads the team with 119 hits, 83 RBI’s, and 23 HR’s.

Washington continues to struggle through a miserable season with the only bright spot being the emergence of Stephen Strasburg as its new ace. Unfortunately, even that has turned bad as he has recently been sent to the DL. The Nationals are 44-58 and 14 ½ games out of first. They are 27-22 SU at home and 27-47 ATS as an underdog. Against the over/under line they are 42-55-4.

Right hander Craig Stammen will get the start tonight for Washington. In 17 previous appearances he is 2-4 with a 5.50 ERA. In his last start he pitched five innings, giving up five hits and three earned runs. In two career starts against the Phillies, Stammen did not get a decision and had an ERA of 15.63.

The Nationals are ranked 11th in the NL with a team batting average of .256. They are ranked 14th in total runs scored with 414, and average of 4.06 runs per game. Adam Dunn leads the team with 101 hits, 64 RBI’s, and 24 HR’s.

Philadelphia is 16-3 SU in its last 19 games against Washington and 8-2 on the road. When you add Roy Oswalt going against one of the worst hitting teams in the league, it all points to a ninth straight win for the Phillies.

Too bad about Strasburg. It was the only shiny spot for the Nats in an otherwise abysmal season.
