The Giants got the best of Philadelphia just the other week by taking two of three on the road. Since then the Phillies have gone on a tear with six straight victories with three-game sweeps over the Pirates and the Rockies. They are the first team to record 70 wins (71-39) this season and have opened an eight-game lead over Atlanta in the NL East. Philadelphia is 41-18 at home and 30-21 on the road.

This team is firing on all cylinders since adding Hunter Pence to the lineup. He has five hits and two RBI in his first four games with the Phils. Cliff Lee is scheduled to get the start on Thursday. He has been up and down as of late with a strong outing his last time out against Pittsburgh after giving up seven earned runs in his previous two starts. Lee is 10-7 on the year with a 3.17 ERA. Lifetime against the Giants, he is 3-0 with an ERA of 1.13. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

San Francisco has gone in the opposite direction since the Philadelphia series with five straight losses before beating Arizona 8-1 as a 156 home favorite on Wednesday afternoon. It is now a game ahead of the Diamondbacks in the NL West with an overall record of 62-49. The Giants are 29-29 on the road and 33-20 at home.

Scoring continues to be a major issue for San Francisco as it has managed just 24 total runs in its previous 12 games before banging out eight on Wednesday. Fortunately the Giants pitching continues to cover up this glaring weakness with the second-best team ERA (3.18) in the Majors.

Madison Bumgarner is slated to get the start for San Francisco on Thursday. He is 6-10 this season with a 3.80 ERA in 22 previous starts. The left-hander has been a bit more consistent over his past few starts, giving up a total of 10 earned runs in his last 25.2 innings pitched.

After losing two of three to this team in its home park, stick with Philadelphia to jump on the opportunity to grab the early edge in this series with a win in Game 1 on the road.
