Sunday MLB Betting – Indians vs. Giants Preview & Pick

Shea weighs in with his MLB Free Interleague Pick for Sunday night baseball. It’s the Cleveland Indians vs. San Francisco Giants matching up at AT&T Park. Odds favor the Giants opening at -138.

Sunday MLB Baseball Picks: Indians vs Giants

Fausto Carmona has struggled mightily of late, getting rocked for six-plus runs in four of his last seven starts. It’s easy to see why: the sinkerballer’s sinker just ain’t sinkin’.

Cleveland Indians (40-33 through June 23)
Fausto Carmona (4-9, 5.98)

After allowing 17 homers in all of 2010 over 210.1 innings, Carmona has already served up 15 long balls in 96.1 innings this season. His 6.31 road ERA suggests he could be in trouble Sunday night.

The San Francisco Giants’ injury-ravaged offense is among the very worst in baseball but a struggling hurler like Carmona could be just what they need. Take Aubrey Huff, for example. He’s batting just .245 this season after batting .290 with the Giants last year.

He has two homers in 16 career at-bats against Carmona, so Sunday night could be just the matchup he needs to end his slump. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

San Francisco Giants (41-33 through June 23)
Madison Bumgarner (3-9, 4.06)

Want to know how to explode your ERA as quickly as possible? Try allowing eight earned runs in one third of an inning. That’s what happened to super sophomore Madison Bumgarner earlier this week when the Minnesota Twins beat him to a pulp. The loss jumped his ERA from 3.21 to 4.06.

Still, I think Bumgarner has been one of the game’s unluckiest pitchers this season. Before the loss this week, he had a 3.21 ERA yet was 3-8? What? Also, note that he didn’t walk a batter or allow a homer in the loss to Minnesota. The hits just happened to drop in everywhere.

MLB Trends:

Under is 6-1-1 in CLE last 8 on grass.
Under is 6-1-1 in CLE last 8 overall.
CLE are 2-6 in their last 8 road games.
Under is 9-2-2 in SF last 13 interleague games.
Under is 19-6-1 in SF last 26 home games.
Under is 36-16-3 in SF last 55 on grass.

The pick:

I think Bumgarner deserves a mulligan. Before his last outing, he had allowed three earned runs or fewer in 10 straight quality starts. He brings a bulldog mentality to the hill and should bounce back. Also, the Cleveland Indians’ offense, led by Asdrubal Cabrera, is really starting to tank.

I like the Giants at home.

Indians vs Giants prediction: Giants 5, Indians 2
