The Blue Jays are coming off a hard-fought split in Tampa, while the Yankees had plenty of trouble with the up-and-coming Astros, dropping their first two games of the year before gutting out a win in the final game of the series on Thursday.

The Blue Jays dropped their final game in Tampa Bay but surely can’t be all that disappointed with the outcome of that series. The Jays went to Tampa with an 0-19-1 record in the previous 20 series between the teams, so getting a split to start the season should not be considered a failure.

As for the Yankees, their series in Houston can’t be considered anything but a failure. The team was able to salvage a win in their third game against the Astros despite giving a day off to some of their regulars, including Jacoby Ellsbury and Brian McCann.

On Friday, the Yankees debut a player they hope will be a regular for a long time coming, as Japanese star Masahiro Tanaka will make his debut in pinstripes. Tanaka came over on a $155 million deal in January, which also cost the Yankees an additional $20 million just to talk to him.

A year ago in Japan, Tanaka went 24-0 with a 1.27 ERA. That translated well into spring training, where Tanaka went 2-0 with a 2.14 ERA in five spring games, striking out 26 and walking just three in 21 innings of work.

The Blue Jays counter with Dustin McGowan, who has dealt with countless injuries in recent years, but was able to make 25 appearances out of the bullpen a year ago. The former first-round pick in 200 has never had his stuff questioned, it’s his ability to stay on the field that has derailed his career.

The Blue Jays should deal the Yankees another disappointing blow to the start of their season in front of what should be a raucous home crowd for the team’s home-opener. The Bronx Bombers also appear to be lost and are already sorting to lineup switches in the early going to try to jump start their team which could pose a problem going forward.

The under also offers some value as it could take some time for the Jays bats once or twice through the order before they really get used to what Tanaka is offering. McGowan also has sneaky good stuff and has what it takes to give the Yankees fits throughout the night.

The Yankees are 2-5 in their last seven games played in Toronto.

The under is 7-1-1 in the last nine meetings between these teams, and 5-0 in the last five times the Yankees have played game one of a series.

The play: Toronto +119, Under 8
