Monday’s “Need To Know”

A look at the hot and cold pitchers going on Monday. The information you need to know whether it is for fantasy baseball or wagering contests.

Probable Hot Starting Pitchers going on Monday:

Doug Davis (Arizona Diamondbacks)

One of the most under rated starting pitchers in baseball he is only owned in 11.4% of fantasy baseball leagues despite having a 3.26ERA on the season. That is partly due to his ugly 4-9 record because of the lack of run support.

Over his last 5 starts he posts a 1-1 record with a 2.59 ERA, but a little cause of concern is that he is getting a little lucky in that he’s stranding a lot of runners. You do not often see an ERA below 3 with a WHIP at 1.69, but that is what he has. Davis will make a tough start here today at Colorado where he faired well in 2008 pitching 11 innings giving up 5 ER, which works out to a 4.09ERA. He will be facing LHP DeLaRosa who has a 2.23ERA in his last three and a 1.27ERA in two starts vs. the Diamondbacks.

Colorado is scoring nearly 8 runs per 9 innings in their last 5 against LHP, but has struggled a little more against RHP. I expect the Rockies to get this one, but should be closer than you think. Interesting note is the Diamondbacks are 5-17 in Davis’ last 22 road starts.

Nick Blackburn (Minnesota Twins)

Nick Blackburn another pitcher flying under the radar a bit he has got a 2.77ERA in his last 5 outings. On the season Blackburn has pitched well on the road with a 3.55 ERA. In his last start vs. Oakland he went 8 innings and gave up 3ER. He’s got a 3.40ERA vs. the A’s over his career so I expect him to pitch a similar game here today.

The Twins though are 8-21 in Blackburns last 29 road starts as the Twins who started the season playing poorly on the road, but since have picked it up a bit winning 5 road series in a row taking 2 of 3 in each series for a record of 10-5.

Oakland has struggled as of late particularly against RHP as they are 1-4 in their last 5 home games vs. RH starter. I think Blackburns hard luck on the road ends here tonight.

Notables – Last 5 Starts!

Tommy Hanson (3-0, 1.09WHIP, 1.53ERA)
Brian Moehler (3-1, 1.15WHIP, 2.73ERA)

Probable Cold Pitchers on Monday:

Livan Hernandez (New York Mets)

Livan Hernandez with a 7.07ERA over his last 5 starts including an 11.57ERA over his last three has been scary. He now has an ERA on the season over 5.10 and if he’s done we should find out here tonight. Livan faces a week Nationals team that he has dominated in the past.

Hernandez this year has two gems vs. the Nationals has gone 16 innings while giving up 13 hits and 1ER with 10K’s. He’s had two non-quality starts or disasters as you can say in his last 2 starts vs. the Phillies and Dodgers the favorites in the National League. However, before that he had three quality starts of at least 7 innings and 2ER or 3ER. I expect him to bounce back in a big way here tonight against the Nationals who are hitting .232 with 2.30 runs/9 in their last 5.

Look for a free sports pick on this game as I am debating taking the Mets here to have a nice series against a team they have dominated as they are 36-16 in their last 52 games here and they are 5-2 with Livan on the mound vs. a team with a losing record.

Kevin Millwood (Texas Rangers)

Millwood has fallen apart in his last three starts he has 8.83ERA, but still owns a 3.46ERA on the season which just goes to show you how much he was dominating opponents this season. He owns a 2.49 ERA but he will have his hands full against the Red Sox who are 16-5 in their last 21 meetings with the Rangers.

I do however expect a solid game out of Millwood as he had a nice outing at Boston this year 7IP 7H 0ER 4BB. I think he should be able to duplicate it as the Red Sox are not hitting on all cylinders with a .229 avg in their last 5 vs. RHP. Note that they are still scoring runs when it counts though as they have 6.39 R/9 last 5 vs. RHP.

Rangers are 20-7 in their last 27 home starts with Millwood on the mound.

Notables – Last 3 Starts!

David Price (2-3, 1.64WHIP, 6.48ERA)
Gio Gonzalez (1-2, 2.07WHIP, 6.52ERA)
