The Brewers (20-8) continue to be the biggest surprise in the league this season, and arrives in Cincy with the best record in Major League Baseball, behind a strong pitching staff that boasts a collective 2.82 ERA.

That pitching allowed Milwaukee to take two of three at St. Louis, improving them to 9-3 in their last 12 games, extending therir lead in the National League Central to 5½-games.

Offensively the Brewers have struggled, as slugger Ryan Braun will be out indefinitely, while shortstop Jean Segura and third baseman Aramis Ramirez missed the last two games.

So they will rely on starter Marco Estrada, who is 2-1, with a 2.87 ERA, to keep the Reds off the scoreboard.

The right-handed Estrada has allowed three runs or fewer in all five starts, including three over 7 2/3 innings in Saturday’s victory against the Chicago Cubs.

The 30-year-old is 2-3 with a 3.51 ERA lifetime against the Reds in five starts, giving up eight homers to current Reds batters including 2010 NL MVP, Joey Votto, who has managed only one RBI his last 12 games.

That had Cincinnati (12-15) off to a slow start this season, until they turned things around with a 7-2 stretch to get back the .500 mark, but once again have dropped four of their last five contests.

Pitching has been a bit of a problem for the Reds, and they will hope that starter Homer Bailey, can get things turned around when he takes the mound in game one on Thursday.

Bailey is yet to find himself, and is 1 -2, with a 6.15 ERA so far this season, giving up four or more runs in four of his five outings after the Braves scored five in off him last Friday.

The 27-year-old has surrendered seven home runs and struck out 29 in 26 1/3 innings this year and is 3-7 in 16 starts with a 5.36 ERA against Milwaukee.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Reds –

Had the Brewers not been so depleted offensively, this would have gone to Milwaukee.

However, with so many of their best hitters on the DL, I expect Cincinnati to get a good enough performance from Bailey to win this one by one or two runs.
