Chicago Cubs vs. New York Mets Preview

1. The Cubs have lost 5 straight games.
2. The Mets have won 4 straight games.
3. The Mets are tied with the St. Louis Cardinals with the most home wins in the Majors.

[dfads params=’groups=63744&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

This season the Mets are 29-11 at home and the Cubs are 19-20 on the road.

In their last games the Mets beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-2 and the Cubs lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 4-1.

This is a NL math up of a couple of teams heading in different directions with the Mets winners of 4 straight and the Cubs dropping 5 in a row. The Mets’ offense has only averaged 2 runs in their last 11 games, but they have gotten solid pitching as of late. The Cubs have only scored 7 runs in their last 6 games and in their 5 game skid they have given up a combined 24 runs.

While the Cubs are reeling they have won their last 6 games against the Mets and they swept them in a 4-game series earlier this season in Chicago.

The Mets only rank 27th in the Majors in runs scored, but they are winning with their pitching, which ranks 5th in team ERA. They sit in 2nd place in the NL East only 2.5 games back of the Washington Nationals.

The Cubs are still 4 games over. 500, but they are in 3rd place in the NL Central 11.5 games back of the St. Louis Cardinals, who have the best record in baseball.

Jonathon Niese is in the midst of his longest winless streak of his career and is 0-5 with a 5.87 ERA in his last 8 starts.

Niese is 3-5 with a 5.23 ERA in nine starts against the Cubs and the Mets have lost 17 of their last 22 games with him on the hill when they are the underdog.

Kyle Hendricks is 1-3 with a 5.88 ERA over his last 5 starts and has lost back-to-back starts for the first time in his career. In his only career start against the Mets he only gave up 1 run in 7 innings in a 4-1 Cubs win last season.

The Cubs are 2-5 in Hendricks’ last 7 road starts.

The Cubs are also led by their pitching, which ranks 8th in the Majors in team ERA while their offense only ranks 21st in runs scored.
