Matchup | Preview

Los Angeles jumped out to a huge lead in the National League West this year, but a recent slump has made the division more competitive.

San Francisco is only three games behind now, and the Giants are playing very good baseball. This is a very important series for both teams.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are really starting to miss Matt Kemp. The offense managed to put up quite a few runs during the first few weeks of his absence, but scoring runs has been a major problem for them over the last couple weeks.

Andre Ethier is having a great year, and many of the Dodgers youngsters are producing at a high level, but they badly need Kemp’s MVP-type talent in the middle of the order.  [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

The pitching staff has allowed them to stay at the top of the division. Clayton Kershaw is 5-3 with a 2.73 ERA this season.

Ryan Vogelsong will start for the Giants in this one. Vogelsong had an amazing breakout season in 2011, but many wondered whether he could do it again in 2012. Vogelsong is once again putting together a brilliant season in 2012. Vogelsong is 6-3 with a spectacular 2.41 ERA so far this season.

The improvement in the Giants offense this season has been pretty remarkable. In 2011, this offense was one of the worst in baseball. This year the Giants have the ninth best batting average in the majors. The two major differences are a healthy Buster Posey and newly acquired Melky Cabrera.

Cabrera is hitting .351 for the team, and his bat has really sparked this offense.

The under is 29-10 in Vogelsong’s last 39 starts. The under is 4-0 in Kershaw’s last 4 starts against the Giants.

This total is very low, but I still think the game stays under.
