The Nationals and the Phillies play the third of three game series this afternoon at Citizens Bank Park with the first pitch slated for 3:05 P.M.

MLB schedule makers did not do the Nationals any favors by having them start the season by playing their first six out of nine games against the defending National League champions. Going into the last of their second three game series, they are 1-4 against the Phils and have given up a total of 45 runs in those five games.

Today they will send Scott Olsen to the mound to make his first start in over nine months after he was optioned to the minors last season. Lifetime, Olsen is 33-41 with an ERA of 4.77. Against Philadelphia he is 5-6 with an ERA of 5.29.

The bright spot for the Nationals has been their ability to put some runs on the board as they did manage to score 11 runs in their last two games; a 7-4 loss on Monday and a 14-7 loss last night. So far the hot bats for Washington have been Ivan Rodriguez, who has nine hits and has scored four runs and Josh Willingham, who has 10 hits and 9 RBI’s.

In a completely different scenario, the Phillies should be thanking those in charge of making up the schedule for setting them up for a great start. After taking two out of three from the Nationals to start the season, they swept the winless Astros three straight, and won the last two at home against the Nats for a 7-1 start; their best since 1993.

With the exception of Roy Halladay, who has been lights out so far winning his first two outings with an ERA of .56, their pitching has actually been a bit suspect as they have given up 27 runs in the six games. Fortunately their offense has been out of this world as they are averaging eight runs per game.

J.A. Happ will get the start in today’s game. In his first outing this season he looked pretty solid giving up six hits and no runs in five innings of work. The good news for Happ is that with the kind of run support the Phillies have supplied their pitching staff so far, you can be far less than perfect and still come away with a win.

Right now I do not see anything the Nationals can do to keep the Phillies from scoring a bunch of runs again in today’s game. No one in their starting rotation or bullpen has had any success in slowing them down and today will be no different in front of the home town crowd this afternoon.
