The Philadelphia Phillies travel to Coors Field in Colorado to begin a three game series against the Rockies starting tonight at 8:40 P.M. (ET). The last time these two teams faced each other was in the 2009 National League Divisional Series playoffs.

The Philadelphia is back on top of their game with series wins against over the Mets, Cardinals, and Braves. They are 19-12 overall and currently have a two game lead over New York in the NL East.

After taking an impressive three out of four from St. Louis last week, they won both ends of a three game weekend series with Atlanta. While their hitting has remained steady through this recent stretch, it has been the club’s pitching that has carried them to a 7-2 record in the month of May.

Kyle Kendrick will get the start tonight for the Phillies and while he has gotten off to a bit of a rough start this season, he did look solid in his last outing.

He was able to hold the Cardinals scoreless for seven innings in their 4-0 win last Wednesday. On the year he is 1-1 with an ERA of 5.87. Lifetime against Colorado he is 1-1 with an ERA of 5.91.

The Phillies will most likely have to rely on their bats to win tonight’s game as it will take more than a few runs to beat this team.

In their last game, a 4-1 win over the Braves, they used on the long ball to get the job done as Jason Werth, Shane Victorino, and Placido Polanco all homered in this game.

Colorado has to be happy to be home after going 4-5 during a grueling nine game West Coast road trip.

They lost two out of three to the Giants, bounced back to take two of three from the Padres, and lost two out of three to the Dodgers over the weekend. Overall they are 15-16, four games in back of San Diego in the NL West.

The lefthander Greg Smith will get the start tonight for the Rockies. He too has gotten off to a rough start this season with a 1-2 record and an ERA of 6.35 in his first six starts. In his last start he did pitch better, allowing only one run in five innings of work against the Padres last Tuesday. Against the Phillies he is 0-1 with an ERA of 6.35.

The Rockies’ hitting has been decent so far as they have a team average of .261.

This puts them squarely in the middle of the pack in the National League, ranked seventh overall. The rest of the lineup will have to pick up the slack in tonight’s game as Colorado will be without their best hitter, Carlos Gonzalez, who has been excused to attend a family funeral in Venezuela.

He is expected back for Tuesday’s game.

With Gonzalez out of the lineup, Philadelphia has the edge in a game that will feature two pitchers that are giving up close to 12 runs a game combined.

Look for the Phillies bats to try and exploit this edge by jumping out to an early lead and relying on their bullpen to hold for the win.
