The Cardinals arrive in Beantown as the underdog, after beating the Dodgers 9-0 in Game 6 of the NLCS and clinching their 19th National League Championship title. They will now take aim at their  third World Series title since 2006, having last won in 2011.

Meanwhile, the Sox will play for their first World Series trophy since 2007, when they swept the Colorado Rockies.

Coming off a 5-2 win over the Detroit Tigers in Game 6 of the ALCS, the Red Sox  head into the 2013 World Series as a slim -145 favorite, as both teams matchup pretty evenly.

First off,  both had impressive 97-65 seasons, with the Red posting a 14-6 record against National League opponents, outscoring them at 118-54.  On the other hand, the Cardinals statistics just jump right off the page, as they are third in runs, fourth in batting and third in on base overall in the league. But games are won on the diamond and not on paper, and pitching will be critical in this series.

With that being said, it looks the series will open with both sides throwing out its staff pitching aces for Game 1, as Adam Wainwright will get the call for St. Louis and Jon Lester for Boston.

A righty, the 32-year-old Wainwright went 19-9 with a 2.94 ERA during the regular season. He is 2-1 with a 1.57 ERA in three postseason starts, but has never pitched in Fenway Park before, nor has he ever started a World Series game. He was in the bullpen for the Cardinals’ 2006 championship and injured during their 2011 run.

In the meantime, Lester went 15-8 with a 3.75 ERA during the regular season and 2-1 with a 2.33 ERA in three postseason starts. The 29-year-old was the winning pitcher in the 2007 World Series clincher, throwing 5-2/3 scoreless innings against the Rockies in Game 4.

Matt’s Free Prediction:

Both these teams are easily good enough to win. But the Red Sox are just a little more rounded.

However, in this one, I think the Cardinals are stronger on the mound with Wainwright, which will be just enough to earn them the win.

Cardinals 4, Red Sox 2
