The San Francisco Giants wish that there were just a couple more days in the month of May. After winning 21 games in the month, they’ll look to continue that momentum as they get set to welcome in the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday.

The Giants did drop the final 2 against Atlanta over the weekend and will look to avenge their 9th inning blown lead from Sunday. Pittsburgh split a 4 game set with the Padres as they fell in the finale on Sunday 7-1.

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. San Francisco Giants

The Pirates look to rebound from what looked like a sleepwalking effort Sunday in the finale against San Diego. The chances are very high of that happening as they send their ace, and one of the most reliable starters in the National League Gerrit Cole to the mound.

Cole has shown many signs of brilliance thus far and has made an early impression as a candidate for the NL Cy Young.

Gerrit Cole has won 2 straight outings and looked dominant doing so. He defeated both the Marlins and Mets as he threw 15.1 innings combined, allowing just 2 earned runs.

Cole brings in a 2-0 record against the San Francisco Giants with just a 3.14 ERA in 2 career starts

As a team, the Pirates pitching staff has shown some major success as they’ve gathered a combined ERA of 3.04.

They’ll need to improve their road play however as they are just 11-15 on the road.

As for the Giants, they dropped the finale to Atlanta on Sunday as they coughed up a 5-4 9th inning lead. That however, was one of just the few step backs they dealt with in a successful month of May. Winners of 21 games, they have climbed right up the standings and sit just .5 game behind first place Los Angeles.

They’ll look to Ryan Vogelsong to get them back on track Monday.

Vogelsong brings in a 4-2 record this season and the Giants have won in his last 5 starts.

He’s gathered all 4 of his wins in that stretch and as he’s allowed just 4 runs over those 5 games.

In his career against the Pirates, he’s gone 2-3 with a 3.38 ERA in 5 starts.

San Francisco is 16-11 inside AT&T Park this season and they are allowing just 3.15 runs against.
