The Marlins and Phillies get set to begin a 3 game weekend series that could be an audition for some players. Many scouts will be in attendance as the trade deadline approaches quickly and both teams sit no where near contention.

The Marlins bright spot thus far has been Jose Fernandez, who will be making his 3rd start since returning from Tommy John Surgery. The Phillies will counter with southpaw Adam Morgan who has been a mess at both Triple A and the Majors.

Miami Marlins vs. Philadelphia Phillies

The Marlins had high hopes coming into this season. They expected to have one of the best offenses in the game led by Gincarlo Stanton and hoped they’d be looking to add a piece or two at this point. However that is not the case as they’ve struggled mightily and now have Dee Gordon out indefinitely with a thumb injury.

The return of Jose Fernandez may be the only shot that the Marlins have if they hope to make any sort of magical run in the 2nd half.

Fernandez has been stellar through his first two starts of the season as he sits with a 2-0 record with an ERA of just 2.08. The Marlins RH has struck out 15 combined hitters in his first two starts and held the Reds scoreless in his last appearance.

Fernandez brings in a 1-1 record with an ERA of 2.86 in 4 career starts against the Phillies.

For Philadelphia, they’re going to be shipping away some key and major pieces over the next two weeks. Sitting with the worst record in baseball, they will try to move the likes of Ryan Howard and Cole Hamels if the deal is right.

For Friday, they’ll turn to Adam Morgan. Morgan has been a disaster at both levels as he went 0-6 in Triple A, and just 1-2 in the MLB. Morgan was recalled because of many injuries to the Phillies rotation, but it is clear he isn’t MLB caliber yet.

In 16.2 innings, Morgan has allowed five home runs.

  • Marlins are 3-8 in their last 11 road games with the total set at 7.0-8.5.
  • Marlins are 4-11 in their last 15 games as a favorite of -151 to -200
  • Phillies are 24-56 in their last 80 games vs. a right-handed starter.
  • Phillies are 10-25 in their last 35 vs. National League East.

Free 4* MLB Prediction: Miami ML

Regardless of the juice here, the Phillies are just a bad team.

Miami 7, Philadelphia 1

Fernandez will have his way Friday night and should have no problem shutting down a weak Philadelphia offense.
