The Cleveland Indians and Tampa Bay Rays meet Monday night for the first of a 4 game set. Both teams are heading in different directions at the moment as Cleveland was swept away over the weekend by Baltimore and finds themselves falling back in the standings.

Meanwhile, Tampa Bay is rolling along and finds themselves atop the standings in the AL East. This will be the 2nd time these two will be meeting this season as Tampa Bay took 2 of 3 in Cleveland.

Cleveland Indians vs. Tampa Bay Rays

Tampa Bay was cruising right along in the AL East, but with the way Baltimore has stepped their game up, the Rays now sit in a first place tie with Baltimore. Still, all things considered the AL East is expected to be an absolute fight to the finish as all 5 teams are within striking distance.

As for Cleveland, right now they just need to figure things out within themselves before they worry about the standings. The Tribe was swept away over the weekend in Baltimore and was held scoreless over both games of a day night doubleheader on Sunday.

They’ll look to right the ship and get back into the win column with Cody Anderson on the mound.

Anderson made his major league debut against this Rays team on June 21st and was stellar. The right hander went 7.2 scoreless innings, but failed to get a decision as the Indians took to the bottom of the 9th to get the games’ only run.

Cleveland has dropped to 12 games back in the AL Central. However, right now, they know that just putting together some wins and not letting the season spiral down is what they need to do.

For Tampa Bay, they’ll send Nathan Karns to the hill.

Karns faced the Indians in Cleveland and bobbed his way through 5.1 innings earning the win in a 4-1 decision. Karns has pitched well as of late as he’s allowed just 2 runs over his last 3 starts.

The bullpen has also played a vital role in Karns’ starts as he’s gone past the 6th inning just twice this season.

Familiar Faces

Cleveland will get their 2nd look at former bullpen coach now Rays’ manager Kevin Cash and SS Asdrubal Cabrera.

Tampa Bay also picked up the contract of former Indians OF Grady Sizemore and he will be in the lineup on Monday.

MLB Handicapping Trends:

  • Indians are 4-1 in their last 5 after allowing 5 runs or more in their previous game.
  • Indians are 18-39 in their last 57 during game 1 of a series.
  • Rays are 4-9 in their last 13 home games vs. a team with a losing record.
  • Rays are 2-5 in their last 7 games as a home favorite.

Free 4* MLB Pick: Over 7

The Indians offense is certainly due for a breakout game.

Cleveland 6, Tampa Bay 5

The Rays will also get their 2nd look at Cody Anderson and should be more prepared for him this time around.
