San Francisco

In October the Giants won the World Series for the third time in five seasons but they are nobody’s favourite to return to October and win this season. While the Dodgers and Padres have made groundbreaking moves the Giants mostly stood pat. They started the season on the road against Arizona and got a win in the final game of opening day.

Thankfully Madison Bumgarner showed no ill effects from the tremendous workload of the year before. A healthy Angel Pagan led the offense.

One of the reasons that folks are not so high on the Giants is because their starting pitching after MadBum is not up there with competitors. In the second game of the season they are giving the ball to Ryan Vogelsong. A few seasons ago he was a nice story but he has had losing records the last two season with the Giants.

They need him to be a lot better than that if they want to contend this season.

Arizona

The outlook in Arizona is not very good this season with many thinking they will battle Colorado for the basement of the NL West and quite possibly the whole league.

They certainly have some nice bats but their pitching is woefully thin and the trade of Trevor Cahill to open up a spot for Archie Bradley could come back to haunt them in the short term. The best they can hope for is that they can slug some teams into submission at their hitter friendly ballpark.

Rubby De La Rosa has not shown much in his limited MLB action to this point. The Diamondbacks are hoping an injection of confidence and opportunity can yield results that never happened in Boston.

Getting out of the AL East could help a lot but the biggest thing is that De La Rosa has to do a better job keeping his walks down. Its a fresh start so lets see how he responds.

I have no trouble fading the Giants in this one. Decent value with the home dogs but don’t go too crazy, the season is just starting.
