The San Diego Padres arrive in the Big Apple on Tuesday to open a three-game series against the Mets who may have turned a corner after acquiring a couple of new players late last week.

The Mets (51-48) got Kelly Johnson and Juan Uribe from Atlanta on Friday, and they immediately went to work, helping their new team turn things around in the second half of the season.

Johnson swatted a homer run, while Uribe clubbed a walk-off RBI single in the 10th inning on Sunday, as the Mets grabbed two in a row over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

New York, which ranks last in the National League in runs, improved to 34-16 at home.

Meanwhile, San Diego (47-52) started its second half campaign by going 6-3 during its recent homestand, but is 23 – 27 away from Petco Park.

The Padres have a chance to improve on that, and make a move up in the standings, if they can get outfielder matt Kemp back into the hitting column.

Kemp went 0-for-4 on Sunday, but has been batting .380 with five homers and 12 RBIs over his last 14 outings.

New York will try and snuff the Padres offense by sending Noah Syndergaard to the mound in Game 1.

The right-hander didn’t factor in his last turn in Washington, lasting only five innings while holding the Nationals to one run on five hits and a career-high five walks. Syndergaard took a loss in San Diego the last time he faced them back on June 2.

The Padres will counter with veteran James Shields who has not lost in his last four outings, including a no-decision on Wednesday versus San Francisco.

The right-hander has won both of his starts against the Mets, including on June 3 when he gave up just two runs in seven innings.

Matt’s Free 4* Prediction

Padres – San Diego has not done well on the road, but I like Shields in this pitching matchup, and if he can go the distance, the Padres should be able to grab their first second half road win.
