The Pirates are playing well but still can’t make up any ground on St. Louis. Detroit has yet to find its groove and the Pirates pitching won’t make it easy for Miggy and Co.

Pittsburgh

The Pirates have been treading water at 5-5 in their last 10.

A record like that is now what you need to chase down any division leader but they are a full nine games back of St. Louis even though they have the second best record in the league.

This is a good team and I wonder if that might wear on them a little.

They are unlikely to slump completely though thanks to the league’s second best ERA. Their lineup can get better too, despite their success they are in the bottom third in runs scored.

Gerrit Cole has been special this season. The stuff has always been there but now he is getting results with 11 victories already this season and stellar peripherals.

His last outing was his worst of the season but I don’t think he is tiring or anything, even aces have one of those once in a while.

On the road his numbers have been nasty with a 6-1 record and an ERA under 2. This is a good spot for him.

Detroit

The Tigers are are coming off of back to back 5-4 victories over the White Sox on the weekend.

Every once in a while you can see why this group should be bound for the playoffs but then they go into a funk where only David Price is any good on the mound and Miguel Cabrera at the plate.

I still think this team has to finish ahead of the Twins but that might not be good enough to grab a playoff spot.

Drawing a series against the Pirates certainly is no picnic even at home.

The early returns on Justin Verlander have been nil so far.

When he has been on the mound he has been terrible and he has already missed a start due to back pain.

He is expected back for this game and his name still draws attention but I don’t see how you can back the Tigers when he is on the hill until he proves himself.

The way things are going that might be a while but the Pirates are far from a Murderer’s Row.

MLB Betting Trends:

  • PIT are 22-8 in their last 30 games as a favorite.
  • PIT are 24-11 in their last 35 overall.
  • PIT are 24-11 in their last 35 games on grass.
  • Over is 12-3-1 in DET last 16 games as an underdog.
  • Over is 16-5-1 in DET last 22 on grass.
  • Over is 16-5-1 in DET last 22 overall.
  • PIT are 2-8 in the last 10 meetings in Detroit.
  • Under is 13-5 in the last 18 meetings.

MLB Betting Prediction:  Pittsburgh -118

There is no such thing as a sure thing but you have to take Pittsburgh here.

MLB Score Prediction:  Pittsburgh 6 – Detroit 3

Cole has been money this season and Verlander the exact opposite. The payoff is nowhere near good enough to back Detroit.
