Philadelphia

Things are pretty much going as expected for Philadelphia…they are losing and not showing much hope of being more than an afterthought in the NL East.

Through the first week plus the only surprise has been how bad an offensive team the Phillies have been. I saw them as more of a bottom half not second last in runs scored with just a little life still in the veteran bats of Ryan Howard and Chase Utley. That has certainly not been the case…and Cody Asche is not going to hit .500 forever.

The one constant (until he got traded) was supposed to be Cole Hamels. He has not gotten off to a good start and it has to be concerning that he has given up 5 homers through just a couple of starts.

However, Philly likely does have a chance in this one, especially since Hamels was pretty solid in a start against Washington last week giving up just 2 hits and 1 run to the Nats. Could definitely be worth taking a shot.

Washington

The Nats return home needing to get some wins in a hurry before the fans starts getting restless. Their trip to Philly and Boston wasn’t pretty with just a couple of wins to show for their troubles.

At the Red Sox their vaunted pitching staff was exposed but thankfully there are few teams in the National League that can line up the bats the way Boston can.

They have won only one game in every series so far this season. That is a trend they need to buck and quickly.

Doug Fister is the least ballyhooed of the Nats starters but he is often the most effective, witness his 2.41 ERA last season. He has just one start under his belt, against the Phillies. He pitched six scoreless innings earning a no-decision.

He wastes no time getting the season started with a fantastic 2.09 ERA in April, his best month by far. His career ERA against the Phillies is only a tick higher so he looks like a pretty good bet.

MLB Betting Prediction:  Over 6

MLB Score Prediction:  Washington 4 – Philadelphia 3

Thanks to Hamels the Phils are definitely a live dog. There are two strong pitchers in this one but when I see a low total like 6 I am generally hot on the over. You just a little offense not a ton.
