The Athletics (14-27) have lost 12-of-14 overall on the road this season and it’s possible things will only get worse as they continue their road trip, without outfielder Coco Crisp , who sat out of Wednesday’s 6-1 loss at Houston with tightness in his neck.

Crisp, is 2-for-45 this year, and like the rest of his team has struggled at the plate this season, as Oakland’s offense is batting just .236 with 45 runs scored in its last 14 contests. That dismal run production has the A’s off to their second-worst start in team history, with the worst record in the league.

The A’s are 13 1/2 games behind first-place Houston in the American League West, and unless they turn things around soon, the hopes of making the postseason could be all but completely dashed by the end of the All Star Break.

Meanwhile, Tampa Bay (22-18) are winners of five of their last eight and remain tied for first in the AL East with the New York Yankees following a 2-1 loss to Atlanta on Wednesday.

The Rays are being led by first baseman James Loney who is 11-for-24 during a seven-game hitting streak.

Tampa will look to build on their recent success by sending rookie Alex Colome to the mound in Game 1. The 26-year-old right-hander struggled in his last two starts, earning a no-decision his last time out, after allowing three runs and six hits in 3 1/3 innings of a 6-4 loss at Minnesota. Before that, he gave up eight runs and 11 hits to the New York Yankees. Colome has never faced Oakland.

Opposing him will be right-hander Jesse Chavez, who has dropped three of his five turns with a no-decision in a 4 -3 loss to Chicago on Saturday. The White Sox got two runs on eight hits off the 31-year-old, who has a 3.18 ERA in three relief appearances against Tampa Bay, limiting the Rays to just two hits in 16 at-bats.

Matt’s Free 4* Prediction

Tampa Bay — Oakland has had a history of success against the Rays, winning four of the six meetings last season and hasn’t lost a series to Tampa Bay since 2010. But this year things are much different, even facing a rookie pitcher.
