MLB: Astros vs Padres

Major League Baseball betting sees the Houston Astros taking on the San Diego Padres on Monday April 27 at PetCo Park in San Diego, California. Cappers Picks provides complimentary handicapping picks all MLB season long.

The Padres avoided a weekend sweep but things are not exactly clicking in San Diego. The Astros are not an easy mark this year either.

Houston

The Houston Astros are not only in first place at the moment, they are the only team in the AL West with a winning record.

Over the weekend they completed a road sweep of Oakland and have won 8 of their last 10, all against division opponents. It does not seem possible that this team is the best in the division but nobody is playing better than them right now. The pitching has been very good and the offensive has gotten unexpected contributions from the likes of Luis Valbuena and Jake Marisnick.

The Astros do not have the best pitching staff but thanks to the likes of Colin McHugh it has a lot of promise. McHugh has won all three of his starts while posting strong peripherals. He is not the most imposing pitchers on the mound but he can dominate like he did when he struck out 11 Oakland A’s two weeks ago.

The righty is increasing his reliability and building on his impressive 2014 campaign.

San Diego

The Padres have been pretty good after resetting their roster in the offseason. Their biggest problem is that they have not played well against the Dodgers but they are 9-5 against everybody else. This series didn’t look like it would be all that taxing but Houston has been red hot and the Padres only took one of three at home over the weekend. This is the exact kind of series that will help determine if they are really a threat or just improved. This is a chance to make a statement.

Bringing in James Shields was a strong move by the Padres. So far his numbers are good but he can be even better. He is a good pitcher to back on Monday as he seems to already be enjoying the pitcher friendliness of PetCo Park – his ERA at home is just 1.29.

He has a chance to face a lineup with a lot of holes in it and a lot of swing and miss guys. That makes him a good DFS play too.
