The Mets (31-27) lead the NL East division, still narrowly on top of the lurking Washington Nationals in a, thanks to the third-place Atlanta Braves, surprisingly competitive division.

Maybe the visitors from the Left Coast can narrow New York’s tenuous hold on first in the East.

San Francisco (32-26) will trot out the workmanlike Chris Heston to the mound to take on “Thor”, also known as Mets rookie Noah Syndergaard.

The tall, strapping pitcher with the flowing blond locks can wield a bat (not a hammer, unfortunately) as well as command a powerful fastball.

Rather surprisingly, it hasn’t just been pitching for New York. Four batters in the lineup (Michael Cuddyer, Curtis Granderson, Wilmer Flores and Lucas Duda) have hit more than six homers; Duda and Daniel Murphy are both swatting over .275 average as well.

When you combine that with tonight’s starter and the resurgent Matt Harvey and last year’s NL Rookie of the Year Jacob deGrom with ERAs under four, New York’s “other team” look pretty well-rounded for a change.

Only a fool would sleep on the Giants, however. The reigning World Series champions seldom look scary during the season, but they generally find a way to accomplish their goals.

The Giants sit only a game back of the Dodgers for tops in the NL West and it’s been thanks to steady hitting – six regulars are hovering near or above a .300 average (OF Nori Aoki and 2B Joe Panik are .321 and .316, respectively).

San Francisco’s starting rotation has been solid, if unspectacular. Staff ace Madison Bumgarner, the young North Carolinian that basically won the G-Men a title single-handedly last October, has been his predictably awesome self.

After that, performances like Heston’s (4.29, 1.35 WHIP) have been the standard. But hey, that’s not so bad when most of your lineup is getting on base with regularity.

For years, it was San Fran that always got the job done with pitching only – this year everyone thought that was the Mets’ job to fill.

All this solid hitting from the visitors means to say that slick-fielding CF Juan Lagares will likely be kept busy out there. It’s a good thing he’s one of the more fleet-footed OFs in the majors.

4* MLB Free Pick: New York 4, San Francisco 2

This game could cut either way, but I’ll predict that Syndergaard has a strong performance and the Mets use their razor-thin lead in the division – shaved down to 0.5 game now – to motivate them towards a home victory.
