It’s a battle of the big boys in the NL on Tuesday as the NL Central leading St. Louis Cardinals take on the East leading New York Mets.

The Mets have had a surprising start to the season and are seven games above .500 and hold a one game lead over the Washington Nationals.

The Cardinals meanwhile have already built a nice 3.5 game cushion on the Cubs in the Central and at 25-13 they own the best record in Major League Baseball.

Cardinals

The Cardinals will send their 23- year-old ace Michael Wacha (5-0) to the hill tonight in search of his sixth win on the season. The young righty was plagued by injuries last season but has returned to form this year and the Cardinals are a perfect 7-0 in games that he has started.

Wacha is 2-1 lifetime against the Mets with a 2.81 ERA.

St. Louis has been scuffling a bit of late and dropped the first game of this series on Monday by a score of 2-1 and they are 4-6 over their last 10 games. Scoring runs has not come easy in their recent slide and they have managed just 12 runs in their last five games and they were stifled by Matt Harvey last night.

The Cards shouldn’t need a whole lot of run production tonight as Wacha has been lights out so far this year with a sparkling 2.06 ERA, though he would certainly like to get some early run support and become just the third six game winner in the MLB so far this season.

Mets

New York have gotten off to a flying start and have an outstanding 16-4 record at Citi Field this year. The Mets have been able to get it done with a lot of solid pitching through Harvey, Bartolo Colon and tonight’s starter Jonathan Niese (3-3).

While his .500 record may not leap off the page, Niese has posted a 2.49 ERA and has struck out 27 batters in 43 innings of work.

Like the Cardinals, the Mets have been fairly average in their last 10 games with a 5-5 record. Scoring runs has not come tough for this team though, as their 14 runs in a win over the Brewers on Saturday is more than the Cardinals have scored in their last five games combined.

Allstar third baseman David Wright remains on the DL but this team has weathered his absence nicely and should be in good shape when he returns from a groin strain.

[dfads params=’groups=63745&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

The Mets will need to find a way to get some runs on Wacha tonight because this feels like a game where St. Louis will snap out of their funk and put some runs on the board.

Cardinals vs. Mets 4* Free Pick

The Cardinals will look to even up the four game series tonight with their ace on the hill and put the Mets at risk of losing their hold on top spot in the East.

Wacha will out-duel Niese tonight and I think the Cards’ bats come alive and give him some support. The Mets’ home record is very impressive but this is a Cardinals team that has already gone into both Washington and Cincinnati and taken a series this season, so they are no slouches on the road.

Take the Cardinals to win tonight.
