We saw a rare pitchers’ duel in this rivalry break on Wednesday night as the Red Sox held on for a 2-1 win. The loss sent New York to their 4th defeat out of their last 7 as the Toronto Blue Jays continue to stay on their heels in the AL East.
Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox offense has been a major reason why they’ve been so terrible this season. Major inconsistencies and timely hitting has led to their doom many times. Although Wednesday was one of those games, they got great work from their pitching as they held on for a 2-1 road win.
While they got a small glimpse into their future on Tuesday by throwing Henry Owens, they’ll get another chance to see another potential future start when LH Eduardo Rodriguez takes the hill Thursday night.
Rodriguez has struggled in his rookie campaign at times, thanks in large part to the lack of command.
He allowed 4 walks in his last start against Tampa Bay last time out as he finished with 3 ER in 5 innings of work.

Still, the LH has pitched well at many other times this season as he’s allowed 2 runs or less in 9 of 12 starts.
He faced the Yankees back on July 11 allowing just 2 solo home runs in 6.1 innings. Rodriguez earned the win in his decision.
New York Yankees
New York knew that with the acquisitions the Blue Jays made at the deadline, they’d be in for a fight the rest of the way in the AL East. Following Wednesday’s 2-1 loss, the Blue Jays got to within 4.5 games of first place.
New York also got a glimpse into their future with Luis Severino starting in Wednesday’s loss. He pitched well, but couldn’t get the support from his offense.
Thursday, they’ll switch it up and go with a veteran who’s been struggling as of late, C.C. Sabathia. The southpaw is winless over his last 3 starts and has just a single win to his name over his last 8.
While he’s not gotten the loss in his last 2 outings, he’s allowed 5 runs each time. The opposition has totaled a combined 5 home runs in both those outings however as Sabathia has struggled to keep the ball down.
