The home team A’s (18-32) have been an abject disaster thus far in the 2015 season; they cobbled out a one-run victory yesterday against New York and need to continue more of the same to have any semblance of relevance in the AL West division.

As bad as Oakland has been to date, home fans have to like their chances of leaving happy on Friday night, as awful Yankees spot starter Chris Capuano faces Oakland’s ace, the masterful Sonny Gray.

Gray has been one of the few bright spots on the A’s this year. His five wins, sub-two ERA and WHIP of 1.00 shows how excellent the 25-year old starting pitcher is.

He is toughing out a shoddy ankle, but you wouldn’t know it with the performances he’s been spinning in ’15.

When the Yankees (25-23) aren’t smashing runs, they are in trouble. They are truly living up to their “Bronx Bombers” moniker this year. The pitching staff is, well, not great.

C.C. Sabathia, long the Yankees (and other teams such as the Indians and the Brewers) ace, looks past it. All those astronomically high innings counts seem to have caught up to the portly veteran.

Elsewhere in New York’s rotation, Michael Pineda and Adam Warren have been decent, but the Yanks are a team that finds success on the bats of players like 1B Mark Teixeira, 3B/DH Alex Rodriguez and OFs Brett Gardner and Jacoby Ellsbury.

If the Yankees can’t bop, they are likely going to lose. Yet, they are rather pathetically at the top of the AL East despite being only two games over .500.

Gray’s presence on the mound Friday night at the Coliseum definitely throws that into question. If he manages the Yankee lineup like he is capable of doing, the Athletics should make it two consecutive wins over “The Evil Empire.”

Still, Gray is not a cure-all for a bad team. He can only pitch every fifth day. The A’s sorely need offensive production from someone not named Stephen Vogt (the catcher that’s posting a dominant 10 HRs, a .317 average and an OPS over 1.000).

Until they get that, Oakland is in for an uphill battle against the Seattles and L.A’s of the world. But the A’s should inch one game closer to respectability against the Yankees Friday night.

4* Free MLB Pick: Oakland 6, New York 2

A great way for American League fans in the Bay Area to kick off the weekend, no doubt.
