Sunday Night Baseball Pick: Boston Red Sox vs New York Yankees

Teams have begun the 2010 Major League Baseball season. It’s time to NOW bring your best baseball betting hat to the table for gambling on baseball in the 2010 season. Cappers Picks all season long provides MLB baseball gambling predictions, so check back often.

The Dog Days of August aren’t starting well. Just a week in, we’ve seen a barrage of brutal, long-term injuries strike Major League Baseball. Perhaps none bigger than Kevin Youkilis’ torn thumb muscle. The Boston Red Sox must soldier on in the American League East battle without their heart and soul. Worse yet, they travel to the Bronx this weekend.

Can they pull off an upset on Sunday Night Baseball?

ESPN Sunday Night Baseball Prediction (Shea Matthews’ record: 8-8)

Sunday, August 8, 8:05 p.m. ET

Boston Red Sox (62-47, 3rd place in AL East)
New York Yankees (67-40, 1st place in AL East)

Boston’s Josh Becket has been on and off the DL all season but he looked good in his return earlier this week, tossing eight innings of one-run ball against Cleveland. He’ll battle A.J. Burnett, who is his usual inconsistent, frustrating self this season.

Josh Beckett (3-1, 5.70)
A.J. Burnett (9-9, 4.93)

When a pitcher hasn’t been healthy all year, it’s hard to judge him, as he often pitches differently. But since Beckett looked like vintage Beckett in his last start, we’ll assume he’s 100 per cent healthy. Unfortunately for Boston, even a healthy Beckett has been an adventure against New York throughout his career.

Amazing 2003 World Series effort aside, Becket has trouble figuring the Bronx Bombers out. He’s 9-6 in 20 starts against them but has a 5.95 ERA. The Yanks bat .284 off him and have clubbed 19 homers in 121 at-bats.

Several Yankees have rich histories against Beckett – especially 2010 AL MVP candidate Robinson Cano. The smooth-swinging second sacker is a .346 lifetime hitter with three homers and 12 RBI in 52 at-bats against Beckett. Multiply those totals by 10 to get a 520 at-bat season and that’s 30 homers and 120 RBI.

Not that A.J. Burnett is a bona fide Red Sox killer. The talented but enigmatic hurler has a 4.92 ERA in 14 career starts against Boston. In two starts against the Red Sox this season, Burnett has allowed 13 runs, 11 earned, over 9.1 innings. Brutal.

Burnett is definitely struggling; he has a 6.00 ERA since the All-Star break. But the Red Sox make me nervous. Losing Youkilis is a devastating blow, we still don’t really know what to expect from Beckett yet and even Jonathan Papelbon has been shaky at times in the ninth inning.

Sunday should treat us to a slugfest but I think the Yankees’ bats will win out – even if Burnett gets chased long before he qualifies for the decision.
