The Los Angeles Dodgers travel cross country to the East Coast for a three game series with the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Game 1 is scheduled for tonight starting at 7:05 P.M.
This past week Los Angeles helped its precarious postseason chances by taking two out of three from NL West division leader San Diego last week and two out of three from Washington over the weekend. The Dodgers are now 58-54, seven games behind the Padres in the division and 5 ½ games behind San Francisco in the wildcard race. They are 22-30 straight up on the road and 17-27 as an underdog. Against the ‘over/under` line they are 58-52-2.
On the mound tonight for Los Angeles is Vicente Padilla. In 13 previous starts he is 5-3 with an ERA of 3.09. His last time out he was sharp, going the full nine innings giving up just two hits and no earned runs in a win over San Diego. Lifetime against the Phillies, a team he pitched for from 2001 to 2005, he is 0-1 with a 10.50 ERA. 
The Dodgers bats have been erratic as they have only averaged 3.5 runs per game over their last 10. They are ranked seventh in the NL with a .259 team batting average and tied for eighth in total runs scored with 489. James Loney leads the team with 121 hits and 69 RBI.
Philadelphia has won seven of its last 10 games to keep pace with Atlanta in the NL East. The Phillies are now 62-49, just 1 ½ games in back of the Braves. They are 36-19 SU at home and 46-34 as a favorite. Against the ‘over/under` line they are 54-55-2. In five of their last six games against the Dodgers, the total has gone over.
Right hander Kyle Kendrick will get the start tonight for Philadelphia. He is 7-4 with a 4.37 ERA in 21 starts. In his last outing he pitched six complete innings, giving up eight hits and two earned runs in a win over Florida. Against the Dodgers in his career he is 2-2 with an ERA of 7.29.
Even with players such as Ryan Howard and Chase Utley still out of the lineup nursing injuries, the Phillies continue to roll. They are ranked fifth in the NL in hitting with a team batting average of .261 and fourth in the league in scoring with 524 runs. Ryan, who hopes to come off the DL later this month, still leads the team with 119 hits, 81 RBI, and 23 home runs.
The Phillies are 6-4 SU against Los Angeles in their last 10 games played, but just 3-3 SU in the last six at Citizens Bank Park.
With a huge chunk of power missing from the lineup, Philadelphia has been relying on role players to get the job done. Against a strong arm like Padilla that will be a bit harder to do. Take the Dodgers to pull out a win in Game 1 in a low scoring affair.
