Two ballclubs that are among the class of the American League lock horns in Orange County on Thursday night, with the Halos most recently stealing a win against the AL East-leading Baltimore Orioles to avoid the sweep and the Tigers hoping that Miguel Cabrera’s recent slump-snapping dingers are a sign of things to come.

Both of these clubs are among the league’s elite because they have a couple of offensive stars to carry the mail, to go along with excellent pitching staffs.

The Angels (60-40) staved off the O’s in their last home game of the most recent series, but before a powerful Baltimore offense came into town, everything was going right for manager Mike Scioscia’s club.

Everyone knew that the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (I still hate that mouthful of a name) had the pieces to be dangerous last season, but injuries and sub-par performance threw a wrench into the gears.

More than the big bats of Best-Player-in-the-World Mike Trout and savvy veteran 1B Albert Pujols, the Angels are getting breakthrough performances from hurlers. One on that list is tonight’s starter Garrett Richards.

The 26-year old righty has arrived in 2014, with a sterling ERA and won/loss record to go with a wispy 1.03 WHIP. Clearly, the guy can miss bats and collect outs.

Yet the Halos don’t have a pushover to deal with on Thursday night. The Tigers feature the other best hitter on the planet (and reigning two-time MVP) Cabrera. “Miggy” had gone 18 games without hitting a home run, but he’s got back-to-back games with dingers. He’s heating up, and that’s good news for exactly zero opposing pitchers.

Detroit also rolls out a dominant starter on the mound with Max Scherzer. The strikeout-machine has been on form this season; he leads the Tigers in ERA and strikeouts on a staff that also has Justin Verlander, Anibal Sanchez and Rick Porcello.

On top of masher Cabrera, Detroit is getting a career-defining season from DH/1B/C Victor Martinez, who has bounced back from serious injury to destroy pitchers in 2014 (.324 average, .388 OBP, 21 HRs).

Basically, there are valid reasons why no one in the American League wants to play the Angels or the Tigers come playoff time.

While both pitchers have been excellent, whichever starter can grab control of the game should lead their team to victory. Everyone knew Scherzer was great before the season, but Richards, Tyler Skaggs and left-hander Hector Santiago were supposed to be at the back of L.A’s rotation.

Instead, Richards has been a revelation.

It’s hard to muffle the Trouts, Cabreras and Martinezs (you can count Victor and Detroit teammate J.D!) of the world, but if any pitchers can do it, it’s the two taking the bump in Anaheim tonight.

This game could go either way, but lend a slight edge to the Angels for the flawless track record of Richards’s season and because they get the Tigers on the West Coast.

L.A. Angels 4, Detroit 3 (extra innings)
